Raise your hand if you read the title and wondered what you did wrong today! You bought the right products for your hair type from the supermarket, tried DIY masks, and even treated yourselves to a hair spa, then why is your hair still falling? Of course hair fall is normal but how much is normal?
To understand the science of hair fall, we spoke to Dr Charu Sharma, Head of Dermatology at CureSkin which is a popular app providing people all over India with kits for their hair and skin conditions.
“We spend a fortune in the name of hair care, but it is surprising that we are not careful enough when it comes to daily habits that could be damaging our hair”, she remarked.
Read on to find which of your habits are the real culprits:
1. You heat
If you have fixed a bad hair day with a styling iron, you have done more damage than good! High temperatures from styling or blow drying
CureSkin suggests: Avoid heat styling on a daily basis to maintain hair health. If you must, then it can be not more than once in 1-2 months. It is also recommended that you apply a protective serum before styling to avoid further damage.
2. You tied your hair too tight:
When the scorching summer sun gets to you or when you are simply trying to focus on something, what is the first (and most natural) thing you do? Tie your hair up! Yes, something as simple as tying your hair too tight or for too long or even using tight bands could increase your hair fall by making your hair shaft weak and cause more breakage.
CureSkin suggests: If you really need to tie your hair, try loose braids, buns and other styles that are less damaging. Avoid using tight rubber bands and keep switching the spot where you tie your hair.
3. You brushed your hair wrong:
Wondering how one can go wrong with something as simple as brushing their hair? It comes as naturally as waving out to someone or holding your cup of coffee after all, right? As surprising as it may sound, brushing your hair wrong could be one of the reasons for your hair fall. Simple things like brushing wet hair, using the wrong brush or even brushing too much,
CureSkin suggests: Proper conditioning helps to keep hair tangle-free. A hair serum will also save you a lot of time, effort (and hair strands) while brushing your hair.
Doing any of the above just occasionally won’t ruin your hair right away. But when these habits become regular they contribute to increasing your hair fall.
