This Janmashtami embraces the green movement by introducing an individualistic and experiential aesthetic to the décor, with innovative minimal surfaces, bold forms, artful accessories, and luxurious textures.

Modern adaptations of conventional festive décor with easy to recycle elements, like wood, vegetable fiber, metal, stoneware, ceramics and clayware, adds a natural warmth to the interiors. An inclusion of thoughtful handicrafts and artwork within the decor, like pottery, inlays, digital prints, statement patterns, color play, rattan, and wicker, shift our focus to a sensory indulgent yet mindful living.

The onset of the season is a great opportunity to declutter the home. Having furniture laid out close together absorbs moisture and habituates the growth of fungi and bacteria. This can be avoided by keeping the furniture spaced away from each other, from the wall and the windows. The demand then becomes for careful maintenance and redecoration, rather than a complete renovation of the interiors. Polished or painted surfaces can be protected by avoiding damp cleaning clothes, choosing protective treatments, and allowing better ventilation. Replacing the heavy drapes with sheer or lace curtains bring in more natural lighting, lending an airy and spacious feel to the rooms. The perfect season to lounge in the cool breeze, it calls for a selection of outdoor furniture which is a healthy mix of floral and lush green planters, and protective bamboo or transparent blinds accentuates the terrace and balconies into a dreamy, relaxing spot.

An ideal monsoon interior would comprise of luxurious colors, textures, aromas, and lighting. This trend revolves around introducing eclecticism to space, mixing rich textures, colors and nimble detailing with light, airy rooms to create beautiful interiors that are reminiscent of a dreamy, relaxing retreat.

Experience of the Designer

Area of the house: 5000sqft

He wanted us to design a house simple and elegant in modern contemporary style which is easily maintainable and long lasting, environment friendly. Building concept is office cum residence.

The house was planned to meet the expectation of the client we have designed each and every area very carefully and maintained the contemporary look of the spaces. We started with the staircase which was the heart of the house since it was in continuation with lower floors also we had to make a strong and creative designer partition which was diving the public area and the residential area the railing was in continuity with the design proposed to the client and the double height wall was designed with the grooving in P.O.P and textured background with metal art work which is having and in-light feature completing the place of a chandelier also it’s a big area and our client travels a lot so he could not maintain a chandelier so we had introduced these wall lights to maintain the artistic look of that area and it is very functional and easily maintainable in terms of changing the light and maintaining the metal art. When we reached the floor we decided to clad this wall with an antique mirror to make that area appear wider and interesting since our wall art was on the left side of the staircase the reflection in the mirror of the art work created a different mood in that space altogether. Italian premium stone marble for the flooring and for lift wall cladding made it very luxurious. We chose our marble very carefully which has a property of not cracking with the change of weather we maintained the joints of the flooring and kept its so neat and polish was done very carefully maintaining the even texture and because of this the house was looking very beautiful.

Master Bedroom is a suite room as well, So It has a dedicated area for TV lounge. We decided to design the room in two parts and to maintain the connection between the two spaces the ceiling was designed in continuation the hidden pelmets for curtains maintained the neatness of the room.

Since each and every furniture of the house is Italian there is no question of final outcome and we are aware of how they maintain their class and furniture quality so definitely our design had to match the standard of Italian pieces and lighting was an addition to our designing, so bed wall was cladded with mirror and with a rich fine quality wallpaper which is giving a very subtle look and maintaining the look of the interior.

The Bathroom fittings for washrooms were selected taking care of their looks to be very elegant, smart and innovative which were selected from de ceramica brizo collection which is an art piece in itself, Master bathroom is cladded with Italian marble. Also the client wanted his house to give a feeling of a 7-star property and at the day of house warming everyone praised us with the same comment.

Master bedroom has a big TV plasma cabinet which was designed by considering the requirement of books to be placed in the area and the richness we had to maintain with the furniture we had proposed so we had cladded the panel with Italian marble and there were drawers to keep their daily utility accessories and both sides had open shelfs made with hardwood and was treated with polyester polish.

We had a limitation of wall height of the rooms which led to a challenge in designing the false ceiling for the client, so the designs were proposed in such a manner where we had to maintain the lighting requirement of the area and making sure that we hide the ducts and piping in the rooms without affecting our false ceiling designs.

Me and my team were aware of the fact that as this project was to be executed in Patna city and having skilled executors for the designs we are proposing will become challenge for our client so we decided to introduce customized texture laminates for the doors and proposed semi glossy PU polish for the frames to make it more interesting. To keep it environment friendly we introduced double glazing UV protected glass to avoid direct sun glaze inside the house which indirectly reduces the use AC consumption. Then we had introduced terrace garden on the top floor so that they have a beautiful area to relax and enjoy with their family, and its planned in such a manner that the parapet walls are constructed higher than the usual height so that there is no concern regarding maintaining the privacy of their family time. They have two kids daughter of 7 years old and a son of 1 year old. When we started this project planning of the house we had no clue that they will be having a new family member adding soon, still the room was planned was so well and the color combination of blue and grey complemented the new born baby boy. The girl wanted her room to be like Barbie room depicting the color of a Barbie i.e. pink so we designed this room by using onion pink color in combination with fuchsia and wine color as well. The accessories were added in silver color, the wardrobe having pink and wine combination making sure that the girl can enjoy this room in her teenage as well.

The lady of the house was really happy to see the walk – in closet we had proposed them for their room. The design of the wardrobe is in combination of glass shutter and solid shutter and having all the requirements fulfilled very carefully the hanging height in the wardrobe is provided by taking care of the lengths of the coats that client had with themselves, space was provided for trouser hanging and shirt hanging as well. Drawers were created to keep their accessories, space of shoes and bags etc.

No matter what the season is, a kitchen is always the heart of the home. DO’S:
1) Think carefully about the colour you want to choose, it shouldn’t be too gaudy for you to dislike it in the future.
2) Glossy light colours add real chic and prestige to your kitchen. This also brings a soothing effect to your space.
3) Kitchen shutters with combination of coloured shutters and textured Shutters make the best pair.
DONT’S:
1) Never add colour to your complete kitchen, it may look fancy initially but slowly you will start getting bored of the same.
2) Dont choose very bright/dark colours in case your kitchen is small, because bright/dark colours make the kitchen look even more smaller.
3) Don’t add funky colours to your kitchen pallete. 

Green Architect, Nilanjan Bhowal, shares some tips!

With the increasing environmental concerns, residents of metro cities are not hesitant to
spend a little extra to own a green and eco-friendly home today. Those who already have a lavish
home are also looking for avenues to create an eco friendly environment at home to pay back to the
nature and save the Mother Earth.
Here are a few important points to be kept in mind while making a green home:

– Structure – AAC blocks (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) should be used for the external walls and Fly Ash Bricks for the inner walls as both of these are natural insulators of heat and are produced from the industrial waste.

– Orientation- The plot’s longer sides should be North-South oriented so that the house receives diffused natural light and not glare from the direct sunlight. If not, then there can be East and West facing windows which should be either double glazed or have a chajja/balcony covering the windows sufficiently.

– Openings- Windows should be placed maximum on the North side so that the maximum light and minimum glare received from the sun. If not possible, then one can place it in the East and West directions by making the balcony’s projection in such a way so that it shades the window and allow diffused lighting.

– Preserve Rain Water- Rain water should be collected from the terrace and balconies for a harvesting tank. Excess water can be sent to the ground through bores, for raising underground water level. Waste-water from the bathrooms and kitchens should be chemically or organically treated and reused for gardening and car-wash etc.

– Waste Management- Sewage should not be released directly into the municipal lines. Installing an STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) on site does the 1st level of treatment. After the treatment the water is sent to the municipal treatment plant where it is treated further. Also kitchen waste can be used to produce natural compost with the use of a vertical composter. This reduces the overall garbage from the building and provides natural compost for the
garden.

– Judicious Use of Old Building Materials- Reuse materials from old buildings such as old chowkhats, bricks etc. in non-critical areas.

– Energy – Most of the energy which is consumed in India is to keep the buildings cool. This can be avoided if the envelope of the building is insulated so that it gains less heat. Insulations in the walls and roof e.g. – by using earthen pots in the slab help reduce heat gain. solar panels and solar heaters can also be used. Light fixtures can be changed to LED’s
and CFL’s for less energy consumption.

– Terrace – The roof of any building gets the maximum heat. Insulations in the flooring such as
vermiculite can be used. Reflective mosaic tile flooring helps reduce heat gain very effectively. Landscaping on the roof is also helpful.

– Water Bodies –adding water bodies in some form at home to manage the micro-climate of the building. Water bodies on the terrace can help in evaporative cooling.

Others -Driveway and road to be lined with plants/trees to keep it shaded. For this local
plants, shrubs and trees to be used. – All appliances used should have a 5 star rating as they conserve energy.

Apart from all this maintaining such a house is also very important to keep it efficient and sustainable so that it does not lose its promising green qualities, e.g.- Solar Panels used for generating electricity should be wiped every week to remove the dust collecting on it as it reduces the efficiency of the panel to generate sufficient electricity. The rain water harvesting collection tank should be checked to see if all the layers are correctly laid and the dirt (if any) should be removed from time to time.
Sewage treatment plants (STP) also need regular checks. The septic tank should be cleaned and the
chemicals that need to be added should be added regularly without fail.

Other minor requirements would be regular cleaning of the white tiles/mosaic on the roof. Double glazing, if installed, should be checked to make sure there are no leakages.

All these small efforts contribute a lot towards creating an efficient green home and require just a little bit of attention. The country is moving towards a developed status so a conscious effort is required from each of us. Just like the dynamic technological developments we see each day,

a) Flowers: This is one of the most common way to decorate temples and puja areas. Lord Krishna is fond of fragrant flowers. You can decorate the temple with these flowers weaved into into long strings that you wrap around his jhula too.

b​) Rangoli: This is one of the most traditional ways to decorate your house on a festival. Make a colourful rangoli in front of the temple of your house to welcome the arrival of Lord Krishna at midnight.​

c​) Paintings: If you wish to keep it simple, you may ​adorn a beautiful Pichwai painting on your wall.
