<p>Do you have a family history of cavities, periodontal disease, crooked teeth, or oral cancer? But, can your ancestors&#8217; oral health have any influence on how strong or crooked your teeth are, your risk of developing gum disease, or even how easily you get cavities? While the majority of dental problems are the result of decisions you&#8217;ve made and habits you&#8217;ve developed, the reality is that some qualities can be passed down from generation to generation. Likewise, certain persons may be predisposed to gum disease due to genetic causes.</p>



<p>Some of the hereditary abnormalities affecting the oral cavity are as follows:</p>



<p><strong>Anodontia.</strong><br>Anodontia, or the complete absence of teeth, is extremely uncommon.</p>



<p><strong>Hypodontia.</strong><br>When a person is born with one to five missing teeth, this is referred to as hypodontia or partial anodontia (not including wisdom teeth). Second premolars and lateral incisors are the most commonly missing teeth. This is the most prevalent hereditary dental anomaly, affecting one out of every 18 persons.</p>



<p><strong>Amelogenesis Imperfecta.</strong><br>The outer protective coating of the teeth, enamel, is damaged or missing as a result of this condition. It may also result in malocclusion or misalignment of the teeth. It affects only about 1 in every 7,000 to 14,000 people.</p>



<p><strong>Dentinogenesis Imperfecta.</strong><br>This disorder causes tooth discoloration or the appearance of translucency. In addition, the teeth are often weaker and more prone to breaking.</p>



<p><strong>Cleft Lip and Palate.</strong><br>These are oral abnormalities that arise during fetal development. The result is incorrect creation of the roof of the mouth, the lips, or both.</p>



<p>A dentist may investigate your family&#8217;s oral health history at an initial evaluation to discover if there is any strong association with certain oral illnesses that may place you at a higher risk for those conditions. According to research, there is a hereditary link to specific conditions that can bring you to your dentist for treatment. To some extent, hereditary features can influence the makeup and strength of teeth.</p>



<p>Some families may be predisposed to &#8220;soft teeth&#8221; that are more prone to decay. Don&#8217;t believe you can rest on your laurels if you&#8217;ve been blessed with wonderful dental health genes. It is still critical to brush your teeth twice a day, in the morning and evening, and to floss regularly. Of course, genetics is not the only factor influencing your oral health. Just as lifestyle factors can reduce your hereditary risk for some systemic diseases, proper oral hygiene habits can give some protection for your smile even if you have genetic variables working against you.</p>



<p>Because jaw development is inherited to some extent, small jaws that prepare the stage for crowding may be a familial feature. In addition to influencing your dental health, your genes can also influence the appearance of your smile.</p>



<p>Even though cavities and tooth decay are not a genetic concern, members of the same family frequently have similar decay issues. Most of the time, this is due to the fact that children watch their parents develop good dental hygiene habits at a young age. If Mom, Dad, or other caregivers aren&#8217;t brushing and flossing their teeth as much as they should, their children may follow suit. Similarly, members of the same family may have similar diets; if Mom is constantly making cookies and offering sugary treats, almost everyone in the house will partake. <p>Ever wondered what differentiates the winter diet from the diet in other seasons? <br><br>It is the energy of the season getting colder, denser, yang, inward, and contracted. This changing energy of the season must be well complimented with the food choices and cooking styles that impart more warmth and energy to the body. This is the little mantra for maintaining health in winters without suffering from any health conditions and enjoying winters blissfully.</p>



<p>Most diseases set in when the body gets exposed to imbalance creating foods that create a weakness at the body organs level. This means consuming foods with cooling energy in winters when nature is full of cold, contracted energy may become the cause of common health conditions such as cold, flu, cough, weakness during this time of the year. The idea is to balance the cold outside with foods and activities that create more warmth within. As per Ayurveda, the secret to optimal health lies in ensuring that our Agni (the metabolic power) keeps burning which happens when our body maintains a specific level of warmth within. Consuming cooling foods specifically in winters creates a cold environment at the digestion level which makes it an incompetent environment for the stomach to be able to process foods completely. This incomplete digestion is at the back of many stagnating health conditions including the most common ones experienced in the winter season. Additionally, winter makes our body use more energy to keep us warmer and thus needs more dense sources of energy to create health that includes foods like whole grains, root vegetables, and good fats.</p>



<p>The macrobiotic way of eating is the most balancing approach to eating by the protocols of the energetics of seasons. It provides a framework to understand the rules of eating by winter energetics. This framework is about understanding what foods create or spoil health during this time of the year. We seek warmth, coziness, and settling grounding energy in winters, and foods that are concentrated with energy are the best to consume during this time of the year.<br>Such foods include foods like buckwheat, brown rice, round vegetables such as radishes, carrots and turnips, nuts, and seeds. Cooking styles that support health and healing this time of the year include soups, stews, broths, baking, pressure cooking, dehydrating, and long pickling.</p>

<p>This month officially marks the beginning of the festive season in India. With numerous festivals around the corner, these celebrations also bring a lot of high-calorie treats, and many of us are always in a mood to indulge in sugary, rich, and fried food items. Overindulging during this time often leads to a spike in our calorie intake. </p>



<p>Pune-based fitness and health coach, Chirag Barjatya, shares some important inputs that will help you keep a check on your festive cravings, and how you can actually indulge while not letting them affect your health. </p>



<p><strong>Here’s how:</strong>&nbsp;</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>While festivals tag along with themselves a spread of delicacies, <strong>it is very important to avoid piling on calories</strong>. One must always stay hydrated throughout the day, keep drinking water and rely on low-calorie fruits such as watermelon and papaya to keep sweet cravings in control. If your cravings are in control, you will be able to avoid piling up on calories.</li><li>The other way to keep your cravings in check is to <strong>prioritize your protein intake first thing in your daily routine</strong>. Eat protein-rich foods early in the day such as chicken, eggs, paneer, whey protein, and soya chunks. And then, with the rest of your calorie budget, you can have some indulgence, since your stomach is already full with protein items, your craving stays limited.</li><li>We tend to spend most of the time with our families and friends, and while most of us feel like eating our hearts out during festivals, it is critical that one must supervise their portions. We cannot expect ourselves to maintain a strict diet regime but all we can do is manage our portions and enjoy the other food in smaller portions as your calorie budget allows. <p>COVID came with damage to every aspect of human physical and mental health. Pandemic was a curse in itself, fear of COVID and staying locked in your houses — the combination was nerve-wracking and the worst is that it is not over yet. The disaster caused by the second wave is still haunting us. And there is a persistent fear of 3rd wave approaching us any time. In this, I can understand that dental health is the last thing on anyone’s mind .people chose to eat a pain killer or a couple of them but not step out to visit a dentist. </p>



<p>And fair enough quote-unquote Jaan hai to Jahan hai. We at DENTEM were open throughout the lockdown but obviously for emergencies. As a policy, we too never encouraged anyone to visit us it’s just we were there if you needed us. Today I would like to throw some light on the damages that have been done to oral health and how to overcome the same. </p>



<p><strong>Regular check-ups to the dental clinic became a big No</strong> </p>



<p>Stich in time saves 9. A regular visit to the dental clinic was a blessing &amp; saved one’s teeth and other oral issues in a great way. Since the pandemic it has become a big no, as a result, we are unable to catch the problem before it becomes a big a result. By the time patient comes to us, he is in pain &amp; damage has been done leading to bigger issues.</p>

<p>I know all of us grew watching Popeye the Sailor as a cartoon and assuming Spinach as the main source of iron. Well, here is Dr. Nalini Pandhi, an expert Nutrition counselor to tell you that Spinach is not the only vegetable that contains enough iron. It may not even be the only thing that can give you superhuman strength either. There are many iron-rich superfoods that may not make you the brightest student ever or the bravest man that ever walked the earth but it can sure help you fight anemia which is a different kind of enemy altogether. Read on what Dr. Nalaini says &#8211;<br><br>Iron is a very important mineral for our body as it helps in the creation of red blood cells. It is absorbed mainly through the upper part of the small intestine and is very essential for a healthy and long life. There are some foods (animal protein) that are amazingly Iron-rich and they are:<br>Some very good sources of heme iron, that contain 3.5 milligrams or more of it per serving (3 ounces) are:<br><br>• Beef or chicken liver<br>• Clams, mollusks or mussels<br>• Oysters<br>Good sources of heme iron that contain around 2.1 milligrams or more of it per serving (3 ounces) are:<br>• Cooked beef<br>• Canned sardines<br>There are some other sources of heme iron, which contain about 0.7 milligrams or more of it per serving (3 ounces):<br>• Chicken<br>• Cooked Turkey<br>• Halibut &amp; Haddock<br>• Perch, Salmon or Tuna<br>• Ham<br>• Veal<br>Iron can also be found in plant foods such as many lentils, beans, and of course spinach which is rich in non-heme iron. This form of iron is the one that gets less absorbed by our body and therefore it is important for us to consume it in rather sufficient quantities. Some very good sources of non-heme iron, which contain 3.5 milligrams or more of it per serving (3 ounces) are:<br><br>• Breakfast cereals that are enriched with iron<br>• One cup or small bowl of cooked beans<br>• Half a cup of tofu or soya cheese</p>



<p>You may also choose 1 ounce of pumpkin or sesame or squash seeds.</p>



<p>Some other good vegetarian sources of nonheme iron, which contain nearly 2.1 milligrams or more of it per serving, are:<br>• Half a cup of canned lima beans or red kidney beans or chickpeas<br>• Dried apricots (1 cup)<br>• Medium baked potato (1)<br>• Wheat germ (1/4 cup)</p>



<p>Other very good sources of nonheme iron, which contain about 0.7 milligrams or more of it, are:<br>• Half a cup of cooked split peas<br>• An ounce of delicious peanuts, pecans, walnuts and pistachios<br>• An ounce of roasted almonds or toasted cashews, and/or sunflower seeds<br>• Half a cup of dried and seedless raisins, peaches, or prunes<br>• Broccoli (1 medium stalk)<br>• Raw spinach (1 cup)<br>• Pasta (1 cup)<br>• Your regular bread or bran muffin and brown or enriched rice (1 cup)</p>



<p>In order to absorb more iron from your foods, you should avoid drinking caffeinated items such as coffee or tea or aerated drinks. Also, limit your calcium-rich foods and/or drinks especially with meals that are iron-rich. To improve iron absorption, make sure to couple iron-rich foods with a good source of vitamin C like orange juice, strawberries, or broccoli. Going for an iron supplement is another alternative if you otherwise have trouble getting enough iron in your diet from regular foods and drinks.</p>
